Returning Joy to the Practice of Medicine

Apr 19, 2022 | Burnout, Podcast

I was so honored to be invited to a conversation recently with Master Certified Coach Jill Farmer on her podcast, DocWorking: The Whole Physician Podcast, which focuses on exploring ways to embrace life AND a medical career. Jill is a former TV anchor, and it shows; she is a really gifted interviewer! I sincerely enjoyed the time we spent chatting.

We talked about a number of aspects of burnout, including the paradox that although physician burnout is driven by system factors, individuals also play a role in choices they make that adversely affect their well-being.

Here’s a snippet of my remarks:

“So many of us are high achievers. That is an incredibly great strength. Where does it have a cost associated with it? It might be the cost to your personal health, to your relationships, to the way you parent, and maybe you’re not happy with the way you’re parenting. There might be a cost there that makes it worth it to you to take a look at: “What is the whole of my life, how does this one thinking pattern and way of behaving affect me? Maybe, down the road, I’m going to wish I had addressed this or had learned other ways of being in the world.”

If you identify at all with this, I invite you to check out this episode.

You can access the video on YouTube or the audio on Apple iTunes or Spotify. I’d love to hear what you think!
